Reduce Costs By Combining Both Double & Triple Glazing
15
If you want to maximise energy efficiency, you may be considering triple glazing for your new home or extension. Triple glazing offers excellent insulation, but it can cost up to 20% more than double glazing. Because VELFAC double glazing already delivers impressive thermal performance, it may be sufficient to meet your energy targets on its own. In many projects, triple glazing is only really needed on north-facing elevations or particularly exposed areas. Every building and orientation is different, so combining double and triple glazing is a smart way to control costs without sacrificing comfort or efficiency
Opening types affect the price
The simplest opening styles are also the most cost-effective. Side-hung and top-guided windows are generally the cheapest options. More specialist opening types, such as reversible or side-guided windows, are useful in certain situations (for example, where access for cleaning is difficult), but they cost more. In many cases, a standard top-guided window offers very similar functionality for a lower price.
Fixed windows cost less
Not every window needs to open. VELFAC fixed and opening windows look identical, but fixed units are cheaper. By mixing opening and fixed windows, you can reduce overall costs without affecting the appearance of your home.
More frames mean higher costs
Large multi-window screens can look striking, especially in entrance halls or stairwells. However, because window pricing is based on the total length of frames, several smaller windows cost more than one large unit covering the same area. Fewer frames and more glass also allow in more natural light, helping reduce the need for artificial lighting and heating, which can lower your energy bills.
Choose standard frame finishes
VELFAC aluminium frames are supplied as standard with durable polyester powder coating, while internal timber frames are painted or varnished. You can choose from the full RAL colour range and specify different finishes inside and out at no extra cost. Anodised or granite finishes are also available, but they are more expensive and can increase lead times.
Only specify accessories where you need them
VELFAC offers a wide range of optional extras. To keep costs down, specify items such as restrictors or child-proof handles only where they are actually required.Plan delivery carefully
If your windows arrive before your site is ready, storage charges may apply. Coordinating delivery with your builder helps ensure everything arrives exactly when needed.
Use a VELFAC-approved joiner
VELFAC-approved joiners are trained to install your windows correctly, and their work is guaranteed for six years. This removes the risk of damage or reduced performance caused by incorrect installation.
Can you reclaim VAT?
Some self-build new-home projects are eligible for VAT refunds on building materials, including VELFAC windows. Visit the HMRC website to see if your project qualifies.
