Fun Fact Tuesday: Did You Know? The First Passivhaus Building Was Built in 1991 in Darmstadt, Germany
8
Passivhaus, a German standard for building design, is revolutionizing the way we think about energy efficiency and comfort. By prioritizing the thermal envelope of a building, Passivhaus homes minimize heat loss and gain, resulting in significantly reduced energy consumption.
The Passivhaus concept emerged from international research into energy-efficient housing. Passivhaus aimed to create homes that could provide comfortable living conditions even in harsh climates with limited energy resources. The first home built to test the Passivhaus concept was completed in Darmstadt, Germany, in 1991. Designed by Dr. Wolfgang Feist and Dr. Bo Adamson, this groundbreaking building has been continuously occupied by Dr. Feist's family ever since. Data monitoring and testing show that the building still performs as predicted after nearly 30 years.
